Hello and welcome to gismondionwine.com. a centre for information on a wide variety of wine and wine related events. Although we are based in Vancouver, British Columbia our wine reach is as global as the web. Our reviews, scores, comments and editorial opinions are based on two decades of serious wine tasting (half of it pre-dating the computer age) and it continues daily.

Wherever possible we have divided up the information into useful bits, some free, some you’ll soon have to pay for as we prepare to cater to both the trade and consumers at all levels. For now sit back, grab a glass, enjoy the ride and use our reviews to help you with your wine purchases.

JOHN SCHREINER

His passion for wine has caused John Schreiner to lead a double life. The Saskatchewan native had one 40-year career as a business writer with The Financial Post. But a tour of the Robert Mondavi winery in Napa in 1974, conducted by the legendary winemaker Zelma Long, sparked an intense interest in wine. Since then, he has developed a parallel career as a wine writer, starting with regular columns in The Financial Post and Vancouver Magazine.

His major focus has been on writing books about wine. He has authored seven wine books, beginning with The World of Canadian Wines, published in 1984.  The Wineries of British Columbia, of which more than 7,000 copies have been sold, was published in 1994. A complete revision will appear in 2004.

The British Columbia Wine Companion, a compendium of essays, history and biography, was published in 1996. His third book on British Columbia wines, Chardonnay and Friends, was published in 1998. Icewine: The Complete Story, the first comprehensive international book on this dessert wine, was published in November 2001 and was judged “best book on wine history” in English that year in the World Gourmand cookbook and wine book competition.

CedarCreek Wine Journal is being published early in 2003.  British Columbia Wine Country was published in March 2003 by Whitecap.
In 2002, the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society presented Schreiner with its Founders Award, an award given annually since 1984 to recognize contributions to the British Columbia wine industry.

A member of numerous wine societies and an award-winning home vintner, Schreiner has toured wineries in virtually all of the world’s major wine regions. He is a graduate of the German Wine Academy and has judged in wine competitions in Canada and abroad. His articles on wine appear in Wine Access, Vines, Decanter.com, National Post, the Globe and Mail, and NUVO magazine.
Schreiner also is chair of the selection committee of the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival.
