Earlier this summer Wine Access held the first international wine competition focused on wines under $25. The goal was to help consumers negotiate the maze of wines available in the Canadian marketplace.

The 2006 International Value Wine Awards (IVWA) took place in Calgary, Alberta and involved an extraordinary effort by a team of 18 judges. All entries were assessed by the Wine Access tasting panel together with a select group of Canadian wine commentators who report regularly on wine to the public.

By the time we finished we tasted almost 1000 wines both domestic and imported from 17 countries, each that retails somewhere in Canada for $25 per bottle or less. This includes government stores, private stores, and the consignment programs in Ontario and British Columbia.

The IVWA will be the cover story of the November issue of Wine Access due to hit newsstands the third week of October, just in time for the busy Holiday buying period. The issue will feature photos of the top wines, detailed information about the categories and tasting notes on all winning wines and the unveiling of the Best Red, White and Sparkling Wine Under $25 as judged in a final taste-off at the end of the competition. We will also publish an extensive list of the best red and white wines in Canada under $15.

IVWA 2006 RESULTS

A quick note about scoring, pricing and availability. In some categories where the top wine shares the same point value as others it was determined the winner in a final taste-off. We have gone the extra mile to get you the price of the winners in two or three provinces and a Canadian price range for all other wines. We have done our best to make sure all of the wines are in the market but vintages roll over constantly so some wines may be out of stock.
