Top 10 : Wines for the Holiday Table

By: Treve Ring & Anthony Gismondi
Open the bottles and let the guests choose for themselves

There's enough to think about during the holiday season.

Scheduling, shopping, decorating, decoding, gifting, gathering, friends, family, feasting... As the clock counts down to Christmas Day, let us take away one thing to think about: wine for the holiday table. Instead of stressing about the perfect wine(s) to serve with your feast (of course, there is no such wine), do what we do. Open a few bottles, put them on the holiday table, and let people pick and choose for themselves. Sacrilege? Not at all. Considering all the different flavours on the table, and the different personalities around the table, its genius to select a few different bottles that are classically food-friendly and seasonally appropriate. You needn't select all ten (though if you do, invite us over please). Pick one or two whites, a dry rosé and/or a light red or two, plus a fizz to start and a sweet wine to finish. The wines will invite conversation and facilitate festivities. It's one less thing for you to think about, and more for you to enjoy. Availability varies between government and private wine shops so be sure to engage with staff for bests results and if they don't have any of our picks, giving a name will set them off in the right direction. Happy Holidays.

Every week Treve Ring and Anthony Gismondi collaborate on our Top Ten list, released on Thursday morning, often with a timely theme. If you count carefully the list will more than likely exceed ten names but only because we believe if any wine is tied by a score that makes our list it should be included. We know many of you are wine savvy and can do your own sleuthing to locate our weekly picks but for those who asked: BCLS means it is sold in government retail stores; when we say private wine shops we mean it could be in any private wine shop or liquor retail store (LRS); winery direct means check with the winery online. If it’s not sold in BC we usually try and give you a suggested retail price. Prices change hourly in BC – the price we post is what we are given at publication.
