Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay Vintner's Reserve 2002

California, United StatesThe KJ VR as it is known throughout the US is made from 100 percent chardonnay and an amazing 65 per cent of that is estate fruit. The purchased fruit is soured primarily from Sangiacomo, Beckstoffer, Strong and Franscioni vineyards in Carneros, Mendocino, Russian River and Monterey. The fruit is 100 percent coastal (32 Monterey, 32 Santa Barbara and 36 North Coast. There's little doubt VR is changing with the times beginning with less residual sugar (nearly half the original level). In short the style is leaner, fresher with more mineral content. Even the oak is changing: only 17 percent is new, and more and more of that, is French. Look for a mix of citrus butter, orange and honey aromas streaked mineral and citrus rind. On the palate the flavours are ripe and nutty with some tropical notes and a warm generous honeyed finished but again it's leaner and more food friendly than its ever been. Amazing quality for 110,000 barrels and 2.25 to 3 million cases a year! Tasted: 08 April 2004Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
