Tuscany, ItalyItaly is well known for its oxidative style of winemaking, but this is very close to crossing the line into just plain oxidized. There’s some bruised apple, soy, and stewed dark fruits as well as leather and sun-dried tomato. The fruit character is slightly fresher on the palate, but overall it still seems past peak, with assertive tannins drying out the finish. Castello di Gabbiano Chianti Classico Riserva 2013

Tuscany, ItalyThe fruit comes off the oldest vineyards and there is five percent merlot added to the traditional sangiovese. The fermented wine spends twelve months in French oak casks from 15hl to 30hl, as well as in small 225 litre barrels (20 percent new). The wine also spends a year in bottle before release. There is better intensity here when compared to the Chianti Classico, but the style is light with spicy red fruits and chocolate flavours with more underbrush. Tuscany, ItalyFirm young dry juicy style with a little less fruit and a little more earth on the nose and palate. The 'classico' moniker seems to dry out the mid-palate where tannins sit over the fruit. Solid mid-week sangiovese that could use a bit more fruit.
