Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Wiltinger Alte Reben 2014

Mosel, GermanyThough Schlangengraben means 'snake pit' in German, there are no snakes around this vineyard, though there are lots of little lizards that love the hot, red slate soils. Also loving the slate soils here: riesling vines, up to 110 years old (Alte Reben means old vines). Concentration with restraint, with ample stone, light honeysuckle, herbed Bosc pear and fragrant Mediterranean lemon filling the honed frame. The slippery palate pulses with a precision that is highly alluring - fortunate because with only 10.5 percent alcohol, this smashable riesling goes quickly. Wild ferment, a subtle, herbal minerality draws throughout this quietly confident wine. This is VDP Ortswein, or village wine, assigned to traditional vineyards and grapes, and often terroir driven. Trocken (dry), VDP Ortswein can append the name of the village to the label - here, Wiltinger.Tasted: 11 July 2016Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
