Emandare Pinot Noir 2014

Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, CanadaEmandare sits on a south-facing terraced hillside tucked beside Cowichan Valley's Mount Prevost. All of their wines are estate grown, dry farmed organically, with minimal intervention. This is four clones (114, 115, 667, 777) of pinot noir, destemmed and lightly crushed before a wild ferment in open top neutral French oak puncheons, and a ten month stint on lees in neutral French oak. Racked only once, this was bottled unfined and unfiltered, providing an authentic, clear lens to view coastal pinot noir. Juicy and pure, salted black plum, wild blackberry branch, thorny florals and balsamic jus swipe along the base. Savoury and bright (a welcome 12.5 percent), with taut, tight and grippy tannins through a lingering, salty finish. Young, keen, precise. The risks of growing finicky pinot noir in such a fringe region are huge, as is the risk to do it as naturally as Emandare has done.Tasted: 13 January 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
