Niepoort Batuta 2014

Cima Corga, Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalBatuta is an impressive very old vine red, with fruit from Quinta do Carril, a north-facing vineyard more than 70-years-old, and also from 100-years-old vineyards near Quinta de NĂ¡poles. This blend of tinta amarela, rufete, touriga franca, tinta roriz, malvazia preta and others fermented in stainless steel, with two months maceration and no extraction before heading to French barrel, 20 percent new, for 22 months. Finessed and structured, with lithe, bamboo-firm tannins and precise, fresh acidity driving the length of the wine. Dusky dark plum, black cherry, savoury stoniness textures throughout. Such refinement and detailing, even in this tight, young stage; it will express even more over the next decade and beyond. All this within 12.5 percent alcohol.
