Niepoort Vertente 2014

Cima Corga, Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalVertente can be thought of as the son of Batuta. By that I mean this is in the same fresh, lean vein as the exceptional Batuta, though here the wine has the energy and verve of youth. Sourced from older vineyards in Pinhão as well as Quinta de Nápoles, averaging 30-60 years, and a mix of tinta amarela, rufete, tinta roriz, touriga franca and others. This was fermented in stainless steel, with a month-long maceration, before aging in French oak (30 percent new) for 20 months. Bright and fresh, with a juicy core of wild blackberry, raspberry, herbal violets, smoked garrigue scrub and lashings of mineral salts. This has a lovely tension and energy, with a cut of acidity and tannins firm but not aggressive.Tasted: 06 February 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
