Anthonij Rupert Optima 2012

Western Cape, South AfricaThis is one of the Anthonij Rupert projects, now owned by the Rupert family and based on the l'Ormarins Farm in Franschhoek, dating back to the 17th Century. This is cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc on decomposed granite and clay from Franschhoek and Darling. Fermented in new French oak barrels and 10000L wood tanks, the wines wines were made and aged separately for 18 months in barrels (35 percent new oak) before blending and aging for a further 6 months in barrel and tank, and then bottle matured for two more years before release. Rich and ripe, with ample oak still guiding the dense, textured fruit, but it has integrated well with this effort into aging. Tobacco, black cherries, cassis are surrounded with thicker tannins, though there is a fine elegance and stony vein on the palate that shows pedigree and potential for aging. This is a bigger red drinking very well now, and will reward with another couple of years in the cellar.Tasted: 05 June 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
