Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIt’s been a while since we have seen this wine, but a decade on it is more interesting. Winemaker Dwight Sick adds 5 percent petit verdot to the mix to darken and spice this mid-valley merlot. Half the fruit goes into the ferment whole cluster. It spends 18 months in 50/50 French and American oak before it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The attack is fresh with plummy red fruit flavours, medium acidity and spice with slightly sticky tannins. The sweet American(?) oak leaves a sheen over the finish that subdues the wines energy. Ready to drink. Best with grilled meats.Tasted: 11 August 2017Tasted by: Prices:
Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaMerlot is the most planted red grape in BC, and so often I ask myself "why?" The rare wines like this remind me why we can't paint all merlot with the same thick oaky plum brush (but seriously BC, don't do so much!). That said, this wine has 5 percent petit verdot added in, perhaps as the saving grace. The 2014 is half whole cluster, entirely fermented in wood (50/50 French and American) before being racked to barrel for 18 months prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered. Alluring perfumed plum, cassis, herbal blackberry, thorn is lifted with an easy, effortless acidity, bracketed with tightly gritty, fine tannins.Tasted: 11 August 2017Tasted by: Prices:
