Feudi di San Gregorio Dubl Rosato Aglianico NV NV

Campania, ItalyA lot of sparkling wine leaves me wanting, especially rosés. Most are light years ahead of where they were in the 1980's or 1990’s but as clean, fresh, and as expensive as they are, few are as complex as the real competition, Champagne. That said, this week I stumbled on this fabulous bottle of sparkling rosé from Italy. Riccardo Cotarella and Anselme Selosse are the winemaker behind Fuedi’s impressive sparkling wines. The vineyards spread out over the lush and gentle hills in Sorbo Serpico, about an hour from Naples and Mount Vesuvius. It's the unique volcanic, sandstone, marly soil that free up the wealth of cherries, cinnamon and licorice that mark the nose and palate. The Rosato is 100 percent aglianico di taurasi, harvested in part from century-old pre-phylloxera vines. The colour is barley pink. The attack fresh with bright, floral, citrus fruits. The Rosato is all about refinement and elegance in the glass. Creamy but bright and fragrant with notes of ginger and nectarine skin it finishes in a storm of stony minerality. Smoked salmon, shellfish, prawns you name it, it all works here. The story began in 2003 when Feudi di San Gregorio made the decision to produce sparkling wine using the method champenoise and the region’s historic varietals of falanghina, greco di tufo and aglianico grapes. The name Dubl signifies the project partners Feudi and its French partner, the renown Champagne house of Anselme Selosse. Greco Brut dates to the occupation of Naples by Louis XII in the 15th century, who demanded that the Neapolitans make a sparkling wine in his honour. The combination of greco and the local chalky composition of the Tufo soil was a perfect fit.Tasted: 01 December 2017Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
