Castelvecchi Madonnino della Pieve Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016

Tuscany, ItalyGran Selezione sits at the top of the sangiovese heap in Chianti, and old vineyards like Madonnino planted in Radda in 1970 play their part. The bunches are picked over time as they reach maturity and are fermented separately. The ageing is 24 months in young French barriques plus 18 months in large barrels. The result is a powerhouse Chianti awash in wild cherry and long, round, soft tannins flecked with spice, balsamico, and violets. This is a giant of a wine and one that will require a decade of ageing to reach its zenith or more. A mushroom risotto or wild boar are in its future.Tasted: 01 July 2023Tasted by: Prices:
