Champagne Frédéric Savart l'Ouverture 1er Cru Brut NV
Montagne de Reims, Champagne, FranceSituated 10 km west of Reims, Frédéric Savart is based in the village of Écueil, in the Val de Reims. Continuing from his father's work with their 'laboratory of terroirs,' Savart has made the 4-hectare property his own and has become one of the superstars of the Grower Champagne movement. L'Ouverture is the introduction to Freddy's range, with three vintages of Pinot Noir from Écueil's sandy soils, native fermented and aged in a mix of stainless and barrel before heading to bottle. This bottle, from the cellar, was disgorged in October 2023, with 3.5 g/L. Burnished white cherry, raspberries, perfumed cherry blossoms, and lemon peel are based with a riffing chalkiness, and topped with a savoury umami overlay which is crying out for food.Prices:| QC | $155.25 | 750ml |

Champagne Vilmart & Cie Grand Réserve Brut Premier Cru NV
Montagne de Reims, Champagne, FranceThough no longer technically a grower of champagne because Vilmart & Cie sources some grapes, they are certainly in the same authentic, hands-on, small-scale league. This is a 70/30 pinot noir/chardonnay cuvée (not to be mistaken with their Grand Cellier, which reverses the grapes in the mix). From 1er cru Rilly-la-Montagne, and vines averaging 40 years, this was fermented in large oak foudres for 10 months (no MLF) before heading to bottle. This was dosed with 8 g/L in April 2023. Bright green apple, lemon, and meringue strike a beauty balance on the palate, with a gentle expansiveness matched by a chardy bracketing, finishing with chalk dust. A lovely bottle, worthy of solo sipping or the dinner table.Prices:| BC | $110.00 | 750ml |

Château de Montguéret Crémant de Loire Brut NV
Loire, FranceThis is a simple crémant from a surprising mix of chenin, cabernet franc, and chardonnay, aged 15-18 months sur lattes, meaning bottles are stored on their side on wooden laths to keep the cork moist and airtight, crucial for proper maturation, before disgorging. I like the fruity melon with a rush of juicy grapefruit, but the texture is a bit too frothy in the mouth. Perhaps this is best suited to sparkling drinks or breakfast with orange juice.Prices:| ON | $22.95 | 750ml |

Evolve Brut Libre 2017
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaEvolve Sparkling House is making a splash in Penticton, and it starts with a solid line-up of serious bubbles. The 2017 Brut Libre is predominantly chardonnay (64%) and pinot noir (25%), with the addition of pinot blanc (10%) and riesling (1%) grounding this to the Okanagan. It spent five years on lees, and it's very much about the resulting toasty autolytic character, rounded with dried lemon peel, green apple, and honey. Although technically extra brut (1.8 g/L), the ripeness of fruit gives this more of a classic Brut feel and balance, finishing dry but not austere. Excellent value at $34.99 – recommended.Prices:| BC | $34.99 | 750ml |

Noble Ridge The One Sparkling Brut 2019
Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe One is crafted using the Méthode Traditionnelle, or the second fermentation in the bottle. The fruit is grown in the Home Vineyard overlooking Vaseux Lake in Okanagan Falls, on north and south facing slopes over sand, gravel, and rock. It is a 77/23 blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, made from hand picked whole cluster pressed fruit, all in pursuit of finesse. This was aged an impressive 67 months in bottle, plenty of time to develop its character. There is a persistent bead of small bubbles that lifts its citrus, leesy nose out of the glass. The attack is fresh and pure, cleaner than the 2018, followed by green apples, almonds, and muted cherry. The finish is mostly dry, with a mineral, saline undertone. A sophisticated glass of sparkling wine that is ready to enjoy. Another BC bubble making continuous progress.Prices:| BC | $34.99 | 750ml |

Evolve Dealcoholized Sparkles 2025
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAt less than 1% alcohol, Sparkles faces the common challenges all non-alcoholic drinks encounter: delivering texture and some mid-palate weight with little or no sugar. That's what appeals most to those of us looking for a beverage that is, first and foremost, tasty. What I appreciate here is that they chose a sparkling wine over a still wine, where the bubbles can enhance the flavour and create the illusion of texture and weight. The use of aromatic gewürztraminer boosts the fruity, attractive palate. While it contains about 15 grams of residual sugar, the acidity seems to offset some of it, leaving a pleasant aftertaste. Expect notes of honeysuckle, lychee, rose petal, and citrus that cleanses the palate. Sparkles is a promising start and easily fills the gap for those seeking a delightful non-alcoholic option.Prices:| BC | $22.99 | 750ml |

Almond pastry, crunchy green apple, toasted brioche, and pear blossoms rides a well padded palate, still with sharped acidity to absorb before a bitter citrus pith finish. A very aspirational wine, and certainly a project to watch.Prices:| BC | $34.99 | 750ml |

Maria Rigol Ordi Microtiratge 9 Cava Gran Reserva 2013
Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Penedès, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainMaria Rigol Ordi is a 5th generation family of Cava makers since 1897, based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. Along with their main range of Cavas, they also began producing microtiratges, small experimental productions of unique cavas, in 2013. This, #9, is a blend of xarel-lo, macabeo, and pinot noir from the 2013 vintage, with 126 months on lees until disgorgement in September 2024. That catapults it into Gran Reserva category. 1343 bottles. A sherried note opens the nose, with ample autolytic notes of toasted hazelnuts, brioche, and dough. Toast, crunchy apples, and pithy lemon enter on the palate, narrowing the focus to a lemon pith finish. There is ample development here, with 10 years on lees action. A divisive, mature, contemplative style, best enjoyed over the course of an evening.Prices:| BC | $110.00 | 750ml |

Blue Mountain Brut Rosé R.D. Méthode Traditionelle 2022
Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaBlue Mountain sparklers always reflect a strong sense of control, never straying too far from their balanced centre of fruit and acidity, and, in the case of their R.D. Rosé, its pale pink colour. The nose and entry are all about citrus blossoms, with crisp underlying acidity and a light, creamy texture. Despite its 10 grams of residual sugar, it remains dry, but there is a bit of softness on the palate that will polarize those who want something more. For those who prefer a softer, creamy style, this might be less ideal. We are quibbling here. It is a fine bottle of sparkling rosé and will easily age another three to five years. I enjoyed it with grilled prawns.Prices:| BC | $40.00 | 750ml |

The last release was in 2013, so it's exciting to finally get a look at the latest one, the 2016 vintage, which is my favourite overall in British Columbia. It was recently disgorged in July 2024, and it's absolutely singing in the bottle. It has an electric, mineral, citrus aroma and attack, complemented by a sense of purity and tension that spells balance. Its autolytic, creamy textures reflect 7.5 years on lees, yet it remains fresh as ever, with a nutty, saline finish. Gérard Bertrand An 1886 Cotes du Roussilllon Villages Les Aspres 2020
Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Roussillon, Sud de France, FranceThe AOP Côtes du Roussillon Les Aspres exemplifies what makes the south of France so appealing. Two-thirds of this grenache, mourvèdre, and syrah blend was matured for nine months in barrels, while the remaining was kept in large vats to be blended in the spring. The appeal lies in its rich, soft textures and the generous mid-palate of cherries, licorice, pepper, and oak. I recently opened this and served it without any decanting for sediment or reduction, and the wine showed well instantly. It slips down seamlessly and will pair well with root vegetables, pork, lamb, or beef. Great value too.Prices:| BC | $27.99 | 750ml |

Gérard Bertrand An 806 2021
Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceThe palate exhibits youthful blackcurrants, plums, and cherries, accented by the aromatic garrigue typical of southern France. In contrast, on the palate, you find smooth black fruits and mocha that run through the finish. The tannins are dense yet fine grained and will support this wine's development over the next five to seven years. It is enjoyable now with tajines or grilled vegetables. There is superb value here in a culinary versatile red. The first traces of Château de Peyrepertuse date back to 806, a legacy of the Cathars who built the citadels of vertigo that still overlook the vineyard in Corbières. Bertrand's GSM blend is grown in the renowned Corbières region, which boasts impressive geological diversity, including schist, limestone, and rolled pebbles. Every bunch is hand harvested, and during fermentation, syrah undergoes 10 to 18 days of carbonic maceration, while grenache and mourvèdre undergo traditional maceration with full destemming. Post-malolactic, the wines are blended and aged for 8 months in 225 L Bordeaux barrels.Prices:| BC | $21.99 | 750ml |

Las Moradas de San Martin Initio 2018
Vinos de Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, SpainLas Moradas de San Martín sits at nearly 900 metres above sea level, on the fringes of the Sierra de Gredos, southeast of Madrid. This is an exceptional red full of dark plum and ripe cherry and raspberry, streaked with dried herbal high desert scrub. Fresh and bright, it has a modest amount of tannin at this point, revealing an authentic wild mountain wine finish. Both delicious and complex, it is a gastronomic wine. Think lamb. Only 21 hectares of vineyards surround the winery, but what vines they are. Initio comes from old bush vine garnacha, some as aged as 100+ years old, high and organically dry-farmed in granitic sandy soils. Seven days of cold maceration precede a native ferment over three weeks, prior to 14 months in French oak barrels. S.C. Pannell Grenache Sunrise 99 2022
McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaThis singular Blewitt Springs grenache is named Sunrise 99 because the old vines, planted way back in 1922, saw 99 sunrises before this vintage. When Stephen had the opportunity to purchase this special McLaren Vale 9 hectare vineyard in 2021 he jumped at the chance, the last in the long line of caretakers. The site, on sand at 140m, is dry farmed, east facing, and organically farmed, entirely by hand. Whole berries were native fermented in stainless and gently pressed and settled before heading to an old French vat for aging, bottled without fining or filtration in August 2023. Juicy and joyous, with a humming vibrato of energy drawing plum, boysenberry along a dusky palate, with fine, furry tannins pinning this young wine in place, and a fine pink peppercorn trail to finish. Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 2023
South Australia, AustraliaBin 407 benefits from the reputation of 707 Penfolds' premium cabernet sauvignon, but it stands confidently on its own as an excellent red wine. The fruit is sourced broadly, a Penfolds hallmark, and in 2023, the main regions include Padthaway, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, and Wrattonbully. The nose remains reserved, offering hints of licorice, cassis, and graphite, with subtle streaks of soy and dark chocolate. The palate reflects this, with more oak than fruit at present. It will need more time to soften and reveal its true character, which it always does eventually. I suggest cellaring this wine now and revisiting it around 2030. Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaAustralian Charlie Seppelt and American Chris Carpenter are the guys behind the Hickinbotham revival, putting this Clarendon cabernet front and centre. Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Napa Valley, California, United StatesFreemark Abbey is on a roll under the Jackson Family Wines banner, with winemakers Kristy Melton and Ted Edwards. We first tasted this wine last November but got another shot at it this week, and it remains a stellar bottle that continues to impress. It is a full-flavoured cabernet that opens with rich dark baking chocolate and blackberry scents. Similar flavours dominate the palate, with some espresso streaks and, importantly, a bright acidity that refreshes the palate and energizes its juicy side. It was a mostly perfect year for Napa cabernet sauvignon, and this warm, spicy red offers everything you could want at this price point. Cawston, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaMaison Smith Montpetit is situated in the heart of the lower Similkameen Valley, Canada's organic winemaking capital. This wine, labelled VQA British Columbia, suggests a blend of sites, likely in the south Okanagan and the Similkameen. The farm to table, organic, vegan producer focuses on minimal intervention and sustainable vineyard and viticultural practices. This is the second MSM cabernet we have tasted, and it is impressive. The nose offers floral, vibrant notes with red and some blue fruit, complemented by a silky texture that defies the grape variety and its youth. Graphite, black raspberries, and silky textures carry through to the finish of this cabernet sauvignon, which is almost in a class of its own. Only 100 cases were produced, aged 12 months in a 30/70 mix of new and neutral French oak. If you are a cabernet sauvignon fan, this is one you should seek out.Prices:| BC | $44.99 | 750ml |

He also took care to source old vineyards of aglianico, at 530m on limestone and tuff, releasing his first (and only cuvée), Paterico. These old vines (up to 111 years) were native fermented whole berry, macerated for up to 4 months in untoasted oak barrels, where it remains for 4 years prior to bottling, unfiltered. Bel Colle Langhe Nebbiolo 2024
Piedmont, ItalyDOC Langhe Nebbiolo is the introductory stepping stone to the bigger, richer, more intense versions of nebbiolo, aka Barolo. That said, there is Langhe Nebbiolo, and then there is Langhe Nebbiolo. Belle Colle is the exception, taking its label closer to the kingly Barolo than most of its peers. Expect the nose to be fragrant, with violet and rose. The attack is an enticing mix of red fruits, intense and with some impressive elegance, in a nod to the nobility of the nebbiolo grape. Look for plums and raspberries amid perfectly managed, almost dusty tannins. There is no apparent dryness here, just a delicious, drinking red. We know it's worthy of serious study, but why bother? It's too much fun to drink. Another challenging year in Piemonte seems not to have affected Bel Colle.Prices:| BC | $29.99 | 750ml |

Laughing Stock Vineyards Portfolio +10/10 2023
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2023 vintage marks Portfolio's 20th anniversary. A smaller harvest has given this wine a bit more intensity. It has a pleasing, barely gold colour and a fresh character from stainless steel fermentation and ageing, during which it rests on its lees for five months. There is a richness here, with honey and nuts, but there is also bright acidity and freshness. Expect a pear and tangerine underside that balances the richness at 13% alcohol. The vineyard was picked twice, 1 week apart, and each lot was partial basket press / partial destemmed with 5 hours skin contact. Each part went into to older 225L barrels for native ferment save for the final destemmed portion, which continues on in foudre. It remained in the barrels post-ferment with regular bâtonnage for a couple of months, and then a quiet rest until the following spring, totalling 9 months in all. Villota Tinto 2021
Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, SpainThe Villota Tinto is a striking expression mainly of tempranillo, blended with 13% graciano and 2% garnacha, all aged in French oak (33% new). It offers a dense concentration and an inviting blueberry palate that intrigues from start to finish. If this wine were from Champagne, Bordeaux, or Burgundy, it would command three times the price. The fruit is hand harvested from old bush vine tempranillo and graciano vines, now aged 45 to 90 years. Each variety ferments separately, and the wine then ages for 16 months in fine grained French oak, followed by a few additional months in concrete before bottling.
