85/100 Gehringer Brothers Cabernet Franc Late Harvest 2002 Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Spicy, mineral, vinyl nose with leafy/tobacco cherry jam highlights. It is soft on entry with bitter almond, leafy, stewed prune and mineral flavours and a taffy apple finish. No doubt about the cabernet franc variety here but it seems better suited to ice wine than late harvest.

94/100 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Brut 1995 Champagne, France

The top of the line at Veuve Clicquot is La Grande Dame, an exquisite blend of 60-plus percent pinot noir and some 37 per cent chardonnay from eight Grand Cru vineyards. It is exceptionally well-balanced and elegant Champagne with a definite feminine floral side. The fruit is white peach and grapefruit with just a touch of vanilla. At Clicquot they recommend you serve this to kick off the evening sans appetizers. After you taste this smooth talking slow walking bubble you too will forget about food.

The nose reminds one of picking wild berries in the woods with bears in the neighbourhood. Minty, spicy, blueberry jam, sweaty malt nose — quite bizarre. Hot, sweet, spicy, minty, mineral over the top style with jammy notes and soapy finish. Not up to the quality of the other products.

97/100 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Reserve 1996 Champagne, France

Described at Clicquot as the most mature fruit ever harvested with the most acid too 1996 is one very fine vintage. The blend or cépage is dominated 59 per cent pinot noir fruit which gives the wine its structure and power and all of the fruit is from a blend of some twenty Premiers and Grands Crus designated vineyards. Big full and rich on the palate it has a citrus and stone fruit mid-palate with a nutty finish. Superb styling and built for the long haul. One of the best young Champagnes I have tasted and it's a dream Champagne vintage for collectors. Drink or hold for 15 to 20 years.

92/100 Veuve Clicquot Rosé Reserve 1996 Champagne, France

Veuve's '96 Rosé Reserve is part of a fine '96 trilogy from Veuve that includes La Grande Dame and Vintage Reserve. The best wines of the Cote des Blancs and Montagne de Reims combine with some 15 per cent of red wine from Bouzy to create an attractive spicy rosé. Rich firm and mouth filling, with style and finesse as intense as its red fruits flavour. The Champenois call it a gastronomy wine - in short it’s made for food. It's capable of ageing gracefully for 10 to 15 years. Excellent quality.

They say the best néro d’Avola grapes are harvested from 15-year old, south facing, vines located in Central and Southern Sicily at the beginning of September. Look for a peppery, spicy, savoury, black cherry, licorice, almond, vanilla/cherry cola nose. Intense rich ripe fruit with smooth, slightly grainy tannins. Big black cherry jam, peppery, spicy, cola and gamey flavours with a touch of acidity. Good now but will improve over the next few years.

Attractive inviting smoky, vanilla, black cherry and pepper nose. Round and voluptuous in the mouth with light tannins. Spicy, black cherry, strawberry jam nose with sweet vanilla and cedar flavours. 88/100 Cockburn's Special Reserve Porto N/V Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, Portugal

Cockburn’s Special Reserve is matured before release and as a "vintage character" port it is intended to reflect the Cockburn style. There’s fine richness here with more body than the Ruby and better length. Special Reserve fruit is picked at the peak of ripeness from single varietal vineyards in the finest vineyard areas and a slightly longer fermentation produces a less sweet finish with more "grip." Look for a spirity cedar leather aftertaste.

91/100 Dow's Late Bottled Vintage Port 1996 Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, Portugal

The grapes for Dow’s Late Bottle Vintage Port come from some of the same vineyards used to produce its Vintage Port. The wine is aged in oak casks for 4-6 years before it's bottled. The style of Dow’s Ports is more structured and less sweet than most other houses and you detect it immediately on the palate. Drier firmer and with fine acidity it offers the plate a delicious mix of dark fruit flavours and spirit.

91/100 Warre's Warrior Special Reserve N/V Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, Portugal

Warrior is the oldest mark of Port having been shipped continuously since the 1750s. The style has changed little over time. It’s aged in seasoned oak casks for 4 to 5 years before being drawn off and bottled following a light filtration. Warrior Special Reserve is ready for immediate drinking and like the Six Grapes does not require any decanting or ageing. Look for dark, intense fruit and a strong chocolate/mocha flavour. Not as sweet as the Warrior and not as dry as the Dow. A pleasing fireside sipper — break out the toasted walnuts.

90/100 Graham Six Grapes Reserve Port N/V Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, Portugal

The "Six Grapes named derives from the Graham emblem that exhibits six grapes the highest quality designation used at the property to classify the best lots of wine. The Port is an unfiltered reserve produced from grapes primarily grown at Graham's Malvedos Vineyards. It's meant to be modern in style as in fresh and fruity and ready to drink but over the years the wine has gained grip and weight and is considered to be less ruby port and more late bottled. Sweet in the Graham style yet mellow and full of soft plummy fruit. It’s a fine youthful port that you can sip now. The winery recommends you serve Six Grapes with chocolate cake or a rich cheese.

88/100 Woodbridge Portacinco 1995 Lodi, Central Valley, California, United States

The '95 Portacinco is a blend of five traditional Portuguese grape varieties planted around the winery at Woodbridge. It took three years to obtain enough budwood to graft onto rootstocks but the vineyard was completed in 1988 and is now one of the largest vineyards of these varieties in the state. Each variety is barrel-aged separately in small, French and American oak barrels for only two years to enhance the texture and emphasize fruit character. Look for spicy, nutty, rancio, blackberry, and steeped tea aromas. Rich and quite sweet with chocolate, caramel, raisin/walnut, rancio flavours and a smoky tea and tobacco on the finish. Slightly tannic with some grip. The wines are blended and bottled without fining or filtration and aged after bottling for an additional two years before release.

This 90/10 cabernet /merlot blend comes with peppery, saddle leather, cassis jam and blackberry fruit nose with vanilla, barnyard and waxy streaks. |

The 2000 vintage is the 26th Alexander's Crown a single vineyard that sits atop a rise in Alexander Valley. Quite an earthy/leathery aroma with prune, plum, chocolate and rootsy cassis notes. The styling is dry and round with slightly tight, grainy tannins. Not big but nice vanilla, coffee, cassis, cherry black olive flavours mixed with a touch of earthy, orange peel on the finish. Drinking nicely now but should improve for with 2-3 years aging. Solid effort for 2000.

Alden Vineyards, sits at 900 to 1100 feet above sea level where prolonged cooler temperatures combined with the overcast mornings in spring and early summer help the fruit to ripened slowly. Look for a rich vanilla, coffee, mocha, saddle leather and black pepper nose streaked with clove, cassis, black olive and smoky blackberry fruit. Elegant and round with similar cedar, pepper, black olive, cassis and smoky coffee flavours. Warm earthy, mocha cassis finish with light tannins. Well balanced for current consumption. Spicy, green cedar, shoe leather with pruny peppery blackberry aromas. Very dry, warm palate with good extract but lean tannins. 88/100 Errazuriz Cabernet Sauvignon Max Reserva 2000 Valle de Aconcagua, Region de Aconcagua, Chile

Tasted twice in the last six months and the latest edition appears to be softening up just a touch. The sappy/cassis and minty leather nose remains and in fact is very “Don Max,” but the wine lacks the total ripeness and richness you expect at this price point. The flavours are similarly streaked with tobacco, earth, chocolate and cassis flavours. Winemaker Ed Flaherty says the grapes are picked over a longer time a decade today allowing for block ripening as opposed to the entire vineyard. This is probably as good as it gets for an average harvest.

Attractive peach skin, green apple, citrus rind and fruit cocktail aromas with some honey and vanilla. On the palate it is dry and skinny with crisp mouth watering acidity. Lots of buttery, spicy, lees, mineral, citrus rind apple skin flavours. An austere style to say the least that can be countered with the right foods but we would prefer just a touch more body and suppleness at this price.

86/100 Pisse-Dru Beaujolais 2001 Beaujolais, Burgundy, France

"Pisse-Dru" produced by the House of Noémie Vernaux takes its name from an old vintner's slang expression: "ça pisse dru" which means that the new vintage he has just tasted is to his liking and that the fresh juice will grow into a perfect and delicious bottle of wine. In 2001, the ripe, strawberry red fruit flavours would appear to bear out the old expression. Soft round and silky on the palate this will please many palates. Solid, correct Beaujolais.

88/100 Villa Maria Chardonnay Private Bin 2002 East Coast, New Zealand

The '02 harvest was a superb vintage for chardonnay along the East Coast of New Zealand. Moderate warmth and low rainfall allowed the grape flavours to reach their full potential. Most of the fruit comes out of Hawke’s Bay with important components sourced at Gisborne and Marlborough. Portions of the wine get some oak maturation, malolactic fermentation or lees stirring in tank. Honey, pear, melon, mineral and green apple aromas make up the attractive aromatic fruit salad nose. Fresh, soft and round with citrus, honey, butter, baked apple and melon flavours. Elegant and rich on the finish with some oiliness. Its screwcap finish ensures you will taste the same vibrant wine each tine out.

Certainly that's the case with the Oakley white an intriguing blend of pinot gris, viognier and marsanne from its Los Carneros ranch and varying amounts of chardonnay, roussanne, riesling, gewürztraminer palomino, sémillon, malvasia bianco and sauvignon blanc. Put it all together and you end up with a versatile party wine that can be a standalone sipper or pair up well with a variety of appetizers. Look for a viscous aromatic white with zesty fruit and streaks of orange peel. Excellent value for California.

87/100 Cline Oakley Red 2000 California, United States

The Oakley Vin Rouge is Cline Cellars’ ode to Southern Côtes du Rhône. The blend is a mix of mourvèdre, carignane, alicante bouschet and syrah. Most of the fruit comes out of Contra Costa County, where sandy soils, dry-farmed vineyards, head-pruned 100 year-old creates an environment perfectly suited to the warm weather varietals of the Rhône Valley. Yields in the 2.5 to 3.5 tons per acre are responsible for the rich plush flavouring in this wine. Look for gamey, spicy, savoury, black cherry, strawberry aromas. The textures are round and the flavours dry with plenty of spicy, strawberry jam, peppery, licorice flavours and a bit of smoky game. Good value here.

86/100 Infierno Merlot Monastrell 2001 Yecla, Valencia and Murcia, Spain

Infierno a 70/30 blend of monastrell (mourvèdre) / merlot is a relative of the Castaño Monastrell and the Castaño Hecula. It’s partially aged in small French oak barrels and is brimming with juicy earthy dark chocolate-scented plummy fruit. It’s dry and round on entry with gamey, peppery, earthy, black cherry smoky flavours. A touch on the dry side but the flavours and balance pull it through. Will be fine with food (tapas).

The 2000 Lucente is tasty blend of 43/43/14 sangiovese/ merlot/cabernet sauvignon. Expect an intense spicy, clove, peppery, sweet vanilla, saddle leather and cherry jam nose. Warm, rich, ripe and round with dry but balanced tannins. Nice earthy, tobacco, vanilla, peppery, clove, leather flavours with black cherry and plum on the finish. Well balanced and elegant but needs 2-5 years to mature. This is the best Lucente yet.

92/100 Frescobaldi Luce della Vite 1999 Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, Italy

A 50/50 blend of sangiovese and merlot in 1999 Luce has a bright minty, clove, spicy, cedary, plum tobacco nose mixed with compost, barnyard, and vanilla and saddle leather notes. Very complex. Round, elegant and dry with refined Tuscan tannins. Nice cedary, tobacco, minty, cherry jam, cassis flavours and an earthy, gamey finish. Young and a bit dry and tight at this stage, needs 3-5 years to fully come around. The 1997 is now drinking wonderfully but will hold and this wine will be somewhat similar whereas the 1998 will peak in the next year or two.

The 120 is designed to be fruit forward soft and pleasing to drink. Twenty per cent goes into wood, 20 per cent gets wood chip treatment and 20 per cent is exposed to wood staves inside the tank while the rest remains in stainless steel. This all stainless steel fermented wine has an intense fruity lime rind citrus nose. More li-mon green fruit flavours dominate on the palate. Look for a stainless steel gooseberry/citrus scented sauvignon that jumps out of the glass. With no malolactic ferment and two month on its lees it remains fresh and tart in the mouth and despite its 13.8 per cent alcohol capable of matching a wide variety of seafood. 87/100 Unity Wine Chardonnay 2001

Unity Chardonnay is a 50/50 blend of Niagara and Okanagan juice. The Niagara portion was aged 12 months in French oak, the Okanagan portion 13 months in American oak. It was blended at Ontario in April 2003. Very smoky, toasty oak vanilla nose with clove, honey and baked apple and some floral notes. Soft and round, leesy smoky vanilla buttery apple flavours but dry on the finish with slender juicy/leesy, spicy notes. Well balanced if a bit too oaky and pricey. Drink now through 2004 and early 2005. The wine has no VQA designation because there is no provision for inter-provincial wines.

87/100 Unity Wine Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot 2001

Each portion of the Unity red cabernet (47), merlot (45) and cabernet franc (8) aged 18 months in mostly French oak in its region of origin before the final blend is assembled in British Columbia. Look for a smoky, oaky, clove aroma with crushed leaf, earthy, rootsy aromas with some black cherry nuances. Young, raw and dry but with some elegance. Smoky, resiny, savoury, spicy vanilla flavours streaked with licorice root, olive, bell pepper and cedar flavours on the finish. Definitely needs a few years to soften the tannins and integrate the oak. More Médoc than California or Washington.

86/100 Fetzer Gewürztraminer Echo Ridge 2002 California, United States

Look for a bright, fresh spicy sweet nose with pineapple/litchi fruit and just a hint of ginger. It’s sweeter and lighter than say anything out of Alsace but well chilled it has endless opportunities to shine with spicy dishes, white meats or as a stand-alone patio sipper. It will no doubt appeal to fans of white zinfandel and other light fruity whites.

89/100 Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2003 Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia

This has been one of the best value viogniers in the market since 1998 and the '03 is no exception, in fact it maybe the best yet from Yalumba. Look for a highly expressive nose of citrus apricot, honeysuckle and orange spice. Fresh and mouth filling its rich tropical fruit flavours finish long. Spicy barbecued chicken would be a perfect match. Great value.

88/100 Lingenfelder Riesling Bird Series 2002 Pfalz, Germany

Some Germans believe there is more to inexpensive wine then sugar. Rainer Lingenfelder’s Bird wine is as good as gets for the price. Innovative and more flexible than any German wine law this is a modern, dry, fruity riesling filled with limey/lychee fruit flavours and spiced apple flavours. Clean and crisp it is the perfect summer that doubles well with spicy Asian dishes.
